THE JUNGLE BOOK
Themes
The vindicative nature of man and beast
Shere Khan shocks the animals when he proclaims he killed a man for pleasure, and not food. In a separate occasion, Bagheera opens up to Mowgli about the scar inflicted on him by a human. Mowgli was mocked by his own species when he returned to his birthplace briefly.
Circle of Life
The circle of life is taken seriously in the Jungle Book. Rudyard Kipling inserts a chapter devoted to explaining the laws of the jungle, which clearly state the rules animals must follow to maintain the circle of life.
Leadership/ Subordination and Respect
Leadership is taken very seriously in the jungle. Akela is the chief wolf, and it was considered a great offence when his pack tried to overthrow him after listening to Shere Khan. The chief wolf is to be respected by his pack, but in exchange for their respect, he has to give them his. It is mentioned in the laws of the jungle that even the chief wolf cannot enter the lair of a member of his pack if he is not invited.
